Welcome Spring 2021
What a day! What a week! What a month! What a year!!!!
If anyone had told me a year ago that I would be insulating and re-siding our 150 year old house after 20 years of living in it, I would have laughed. Last year at this time, the sky was falling, and I didn’t know what I was going to do with all the seedlings that were growing. Today, both Tom and I have one vaccine and await a few more days for our second. A new normal has begun.
Reflecting back, I felt I was at a stay at home vacation; for a year. I finally had time to clean, organize, and think about this farm business. While we did a few weddings, we lost a lot or revenue from many postponed celebrations and events. However, we picked up new business by going on-line and developing a delivery system that allowed customers from around the world to order and have fresh, local, organically grown flowers delivered to their loved one’s door.
We missed the farmers market in the early days, but by mid summer we were back in our corner, twisting bouquets for our masked friends.
The wreath season was amazing. Thanks to all who adorned their doors and walls with Blue Door dried creations. This spring, we’ve extended the craft by adding non-local rose sprays to our foraged greens dried grasses, seed pods and succulents for Welcome Spring Wreaths.
Sometimes, I’m amazed at how hard Tom and I work each day. Yesterday; our day included:
Climbing up and down the house scaffolding multiple times to finish caulking the 2nd west wall to our farmhouse and then painting it with it’s final coat of paint. We have the front yet to paint and the east wall to tear apart, rebuild, insulate and paint. A huge project that we’ve been saving for - for 20 years. Imagine, living in a house with insulation!!!!
House project aside, we also managed to harvest nearly 100 daffodils, prepare and plant 250 kale plants, 216 white and lavender stock, 240 of the 720 lisianthus. Plus we prepared, ate, and cleaned up two incredible meals, (why farm if you don’t eat well?), and had time to play with our dogs and take a walk in the woods. Oh, and Tom played with Wolf Hills Jazz Quartet for a realtors grand opening for two hours.
Yes, we’re sore all over. But happy that it’s raining! Good day to pot on tomatoes and peppers!
Happy Spring ~ The Blue Door is open again!
